Understand that network marketing works if done right. If you’re struggling personally in the industry right now, that may seem like a hollow statement. My goal today is to help encourage you that this will all turn around for you once you understand some key business and people principles.
Network marketing works when you realize that this is a real business. Unfortunately, too few people in MLM look at it this way.
Instead of looking at it mentally in the same way that the CEO of a large corporation, the guy who bought a McDonald’s franchise, or the woman who bought your local dry cleaners looks at business, network marketers for the most part look at this as some sort of get-rich-quick thing and quit if that hasn’t happened within a couple of months.
I understand this, as so many people misrepresent it when they are out there recruiting. The party line for many folks is, “Hey, join up and in a couple of months we’ll have you rich!”
Yes, some people understand business and people and can sometimes have phenomenal results after a few short months. However, for the most part, you should be thinking about your network marketing business as any other business: one that takes 1-5 years, depending on many factors, to really take off and produce huge profits for you.
Network marketing works like all businesses…work it correctly and the money follows. Cut corners, treat people wrongly, and watch it all implode.
Leadership
If there is one thing I can bring up that will greatly increase the speed with which you’ll ensure that network marketing works for you is to work hard on your leadership skills. Realize that people don’t join companies or opportunities…they join PEOPLE they believe have leadership qualities they want to follow.
Once you have some people following you on your team, it’s then time to develop leadership in them. Allow me to quote from John Maxwell’s “Developing the Leaders Around You“:
“Leaders who mentor potential leaders multiply their effectiveness…Stop for a moment and think of the five or six people closest to you in your organization. Are you developing them? Do you have a game plan for them? Are they growing? Have they been able to lift your load?”
I encourage you to work on your leadership skills. That one thing, done consistently, will take you far and make sure that network marketing works for you on a long-term basis.
Advertising
While there are many ways to get started in network marketing that cost only your time, at some point you should strongly consider putting some actual money into your advertising and marketing.
Especially online, you can use methods such as pay-per-click advertising to quickly generate dozens of daily leads. In addition, while you can write articles and blog posts for free, there are some extremely effective tools you can purchase that will ensure that the content you create is blasted all over the Internet.

Be willing to invest some money into your business so that you can attract qualified, interested prospects, just like any business owner does.
